Marrakech is getting a very serious dose of French cinema royalty.
Marion Cotillard has been named president of the jury for the 23rd Marrakech International Film Festival, which runs from November 20 to 28.
That means Cotillard will lead the group deciding which film takes home the festival’s top prize, the Étoile d’Or.
And honestly, the casting makes sense.
Cotillard has spent years moving between French cinema and major international productions, picking up an Oscar, working with some of the biggest directors in the industry and becoming one of the most recognizable French actors globally.
Now she is coming to Marrakech in a completely different role.
Not as a guest. Not as someone walking the red carpet. As the person leading the jury.
That changes the energy a little.
The Marrakech International Film Festival has always had a strong mix of big names and emerging filmmakers, and putting Cotillard at the head of the jury gives this year’s edition even more international weight.
For younger Moroccan film fans, it is also one of those moments where global cinema suddenly feels very close to home.
Instead of watching these actors and filmmakers from another country, they are literally coming to Marrakech to watch, debate and reward new work.
And that is what makes the festival interesting beyond celebrity photos.
It is also a place where new filmmakers can get noticed.
Where smaller films can suddenly get global attention.
And where Morocco becomes part of the international film conversation for more than a week.
This year, Marion Cotillard is helping decide what gets remembered.
