Corvette’s planned SUV could be dead before it even arrives

For years, Chevrolet’s Corvette has been known for one thing: fast, low-slung sports cars. But General Motors reportedly had a much bigger vision for the legendary nameplate, one that included an electric SUV capable of competing with the Porsche Cayenne.

Now, those plans appear to have been abandoned.

According to a report from GM Authority, citing internal company sources, General Motors has reportedly shelved its plans to transform Corvette into a wider performance brand.

The proposed expansion included an all-electric SUV, a two-door electric sports car and potentially a four-door fastback sedan. Instead of remaining a single sports car family, Corvette could have become a full lineup of high-performance vehicles.

The strategy would have followed a path similar to Porsche, which expanded beyond its iconic 911 sports car into SUVs and sedans.

And there’s a business reason behind that approach. Popular SUVs can generate significant sales and help finance the development of more specialized sports cars.

But the automotive industry has changed since the Corvette expansion rumors first emerged in 2022.

Electric vehicle demand in the United States has become more unpredictable, while Corvette’s existing sports cars continue attracting buyers.

Those factors may have influenced GM’s reported decision, although the company has not officially confirmed the cancellation or explained its reasoning.

For now, Chevrolet appears focused on its existing C8 Corvette lineup and the eventual introduction of its next-generation C9 model.

The idea of a fully electric Corvette hasn’t necessarily disappeared forever, either. Company engineers have previously described electrification as part of the sports car’s long-term future.

But a Corvette SUV competing with the Porsche Cayenne? That possibility is looking increasingly unlikely.

And for fans who believe a Corvette should remain a sports car, the news raises an interesting question: does every performance brand really need an SUV?
