Microsoft says your milk has more safety rules than AI

Your carton of milk apparently has stronger safety rules than some of the world’s most powerful AI.

That comparison comes from Microsoft president Brad Smith, who is calling for tougher regulation around artificial intelligence.

Smith argued that everyday products like milk and washing machines already operate under established safety standards and inspections.

AI? Not nearly to the same extent.

And when you put it that way, it sounds slightly ridiculous.

A washing machine has rules about what it is allowed to do.

An AI system capable of writing code, generating convincing fake content or taking actions online can still exist inside a much less settled regulatory environment.

Smith is calling for stronger safeguards, including so called emergency brakes that could pause or contain advanced AI systems if they start behaving dangerously.

He also wants clearer obligations for companies when AI systems are involved in cyber incidents.

The interesting part is that this warning is coming from Microsoft.

Not exactly a company standing outside the AI boom complaining about it.

Microsoft has invested heavily in the technology and sells AI products across its business.

That makes the message less “AI is bad” and more “we should probably agree on some rules before this gets even bigger.”

Because AI development is moving ridiculously fast.

Regulation usually does not.

And suddenly we are living in a world where your breakfast milk may have gone through a clearer safety process than the chatbot helping someone write software.

Technology is moving forward.

The rulebook is still loading.
