Casablanca’s cultural calendar is getting another interesting addition, and this one tells its story without relying on traditional dialogue.
On November 3, the Studio des Arts Vivants will host the premiere of جذور — RACINE, a new Afro-contemporary dance production created and directed by choreographer Joyce Stanley.
The title translates to Roots, and that’s exactly what the performance is about.
Through movement, music and voice, seven performers will explore themes of identity, memory, origins and the cultural connections that shape who we are.
The production runs for approximately 60 minutes, bringing together different forms of artistic expression in a performance designed to communicate beyond words.
When dance becomes a way of telling stories.
Contemporary dance doesn’t always follow the familiar structure of a play or musical.
Instead of explaining every emotion through dialogue, dancers use their bodies to express experiences, relationships and ideas.
And with RACINE, the subject matter feels particularly relevant in a country where identity is influenced by multiple cultural traditions and histories.
The show invites audiences to reflect on what they inherit, what they remember and how those experiences influence the people they become.
For younger audiences who usually discover dance through TikTok challenges, music videos or live performances, productions like this offer another way of experiencing the art form.
It’s also an opportunity to discover Afro-contemporary choreography on a Casablanca stage.
The premiere is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, at the Studio des Arts Vivants.
So if your cultural plans usually stop at concerts and cinema, this might be something different to add to the calendar.
