Heidi Klum has spent more than two decades turning Halloween into an elaborate display of costume design and special effects. For the 25th anniversary of her annual Halloween party, the German supermodel took that tradition in an unexpected direction, transforming herself into an oversized, remarkably lifelike severed hand.
The creation was the result of months of preparation with special-effects artist Mike Marino and his team, who worked to reproduce the intricate details of a human hand on a much larger scale.
Built using a combination of foam, latex and silicone, the costume featured realistic skin textures, visible veins, exposed tissue and replicas of Klum’s wedding rings. A tattoo referencing her husband, Tom Kaulitz, was also incorporated into the design.
The challenge extended beyond appearance. The team had to create a structure large enough to conceal Klum’s body while allowing her to move inside it.
Preparing the final costume reportedly required approximately five to six hours on Halloween night, following months of sculpting, engineering and testing.
Klum has become known for transformations that push the limits of traditional costume design. Previous appearances have included an enormous worm and an elaborate peacock, each involving extensive practical effects and specialized craftsmanship.
Her latest creation continues that tradition while highlighting the work of the artists responsible for bringing such unusual concepts to life.
At a time when artificial intelligence and digital effects are playing a growing role in visual production, Klum’s transformation offers a reminder of the creativity and technical skill behind physical special effects.
The costume attracted attention for its unsettling appearance, but its most remarkable quality may be the amount of human craftsmanship required to make it possible.
