The city of Tan-Tan continues its celebration of Saharan heritage this week as the 19th edition of the Moussem of Tan-Tan brings together artists, performers and communities from across southern Morocco.
Running from October 30 to November 3, the annual gathering is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the cultural traditions of the region through music, poetry, traditional clothing, equestrian performances and camel-related activities.
The November 2 programme places particular emphasis on cultural parades and performances, offering visitors an opportunity to discover traditions that remain central to the identity of Morocco’s Saharan communities.
Among the main gathering spaces is the Grand Tent at Place de la Paix et de la Tolérance, which hosts musical performances and traditional forms of artistic expression, including spiritual singing and Hassani poetry.
Beyond its festive atmosphere, the Moussem plays an important role in transmitting cultural knowledge between generations.
For centuries, poetry, music and oral storytelling have served as ways of preserving the history, values and experiences of Saharan communities. Events of this kind provide a public space for those traditions to remain visible while reaching audiences who may be discovering them for the first time.
The festival also supports the work of local artisans and performers, bringing attention to the cultural richness of southern Morocco.
As the Moussem approaches its final day, Tan-Tan continues to offer a reminder that Morocco’s cultural identity is shaped by the diversity of its regions and the traditions that connect them.
For younger audiences, the event offers an opportunity to engage with a part of Moroccan heritage that deserves greater visibility beyond annual celebrations.
